Max Domi's confirms status of his contract talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs' forward Max Domi confirmed the status of his contract talks with Brad Treliving ahead of free agency.
In three weeks, the free agent market will open, and players seeking a contract will be able to sign with any team in the league. Domi, who just had a great season in Toronto, should receive many offers if he ends up being available.
Since the end of the season, Domi's been clear about his wishes to stay in Toronto. In a recent interview, the player repeated that he wants to come back, but also shared a major update.
He stated that his agent, Judd Moldaver, has had discussions with the Leafs' general manager:
"I know my agent has been talking to (Treliving), though I have to keep that discussion in-house. Whatever happens will happen, but I've still enjoyed every second as a Leaf. I'd love to come back, it's a special organization, a special group of guys."
The man who can make it happen, Brad Treliving, was also clear when he talked about Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi's contract situations in a recent interview. He said that he's open to negotiate, but a deal must work for the team and the player financially as well:
"It's got to work for them and it's got to work for us. We've got, certainly, some issues that we have to address on the roster. There's a pie, and there's only so much to go around. We've got a few guys who are up. And part of this is getting better, too. It's not just being the same. You're trying to get better in the process, as well. So we'll see."
With around $20 million in available cap space going into the offseason, Treliving will have tough choices to make. At the blue line, acquiring defensemen or signing his trade deadline acquisitions should be a priority, and for the goalies, he'll have to make a decision about who'll play with Woll next season.
Signing depth players like Domi or Bertuzzi could be interesting for the Leafs, but Treliving has only so much money to move around. It'll be interesting to see what he decides, but unless they agree on lower salaries, it wouldn't be surprising to see them leave on July 1st.
