The Tampa Bay Lightning run has been an incredible one over the past few years, and while this team has been loaded with talent, it's the leadership of Steven Stamkos that's played an integral role in their success.
Relationship over?
After being drafted No. 1 overall back in 2008, Steven Stamkos, the Lightning's long-term captain has been a key piece of this team, but now, it appears things could be coming to an end.
Stamkos' contract is up after the 2023-24 season, and while some never expected him to hit free agency, things may be headed that way after No. 91 opened up on his contract situation.
To be honest I've been disappointed in the lack of talk in that regard. So it was something that I expressed at the end of last year that I wanted to get something done before training camp.
Time to mend fences?
While that statement doesn't make it look good, it appears Stamkos is still open to fixing the relationship, as he has revealed he would be interested in a return to the Lightning, regardless of how things feel right now.
I'm ready whenever so I guess that was something that that I didn't see see coming but it is what it is.
Like I stated at the end of last year, too. I would love to extend and play here and finish up my career here but that's out of my hands. I can't write a contract for myself.
In 15 years with Tampa Bay, Stamkos has played in 1,003 games, tallying 515 goals and 1,056 points while leading them to two Stanley Cups, so this will certainly be a story to keep an eye on going forward.
