The Pittsburgh Penguins have made their first cuts to the roster of players attending training camp. In total, 10 players were axed, while another was placed on the injured list.

The Cuts

Forwards Matt Filipe, Dillon Hamaliuk, Sam Houde, Jagger Joshua and Evan Vierling, along with goaltender Taylor Gauthier have all been assigned to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL. Hamaliuk and Gauthier are still currently on entry-level contracts with Pittsburgh, while the rest are under deals in the AHL.

Heading back to their junior clubs are blueliner Andre Anania (Sudbury Wolves), forward Matthew Soto (Kingston Frontenacs) and goaltender Michael Simpson (Peterborough Petes). All three were invited to camp as non-roster players.

Failed PTO

Meanwhile, Peter Abbadonato, who was attending training camp on a professional tryout, has been released. Abbadonato, 25, has yet to play an NHL game. Veteran Mark Pysyk, also attending the Pens training camp on a PTO, has been placed on the injured list. No word on exactly what's wrong, but Pysyk missed all of last season with a torn Achilles tendon.
