We now know Jake Allen's and Casey DeSmith's fate in Montreal
The Montreal Canadiens made a great deal in the Erik Karlsson trade. They got rid of two forwards the Habs didn't really need and managed to get Jeff Petry and Casey DeSmith.
Now, it's been almost a month since the trade happened, and we finally know what's going to happen in Montreal's goalie department.
Allen and DeSmith's Fates
An insider confirmed that Jake Allen was told he is staying in Montreal.
"A well-informed source just texted me that Allen has been told he is staying in Montreal.
Does this mean DeSmith will be traded?"
What will happen to DeSmith will probably come after the Canadiens have determined their number-one goaltender for next season.
Habs' Number One
Samuel Montembeault proved he can be a number-one goalie in the NHL. The remarkable progress he achieved since Montreal claimed him off waivers in 2021 has made many people consider him as the franchise's true number-one goalie.
However, Kent Hughes has gotten us used to seeing him play his cards in an unpredictable way.
If he decides to keep Allen, it doesn't necessarily mean that DeSmith will be traded.
He could decide to keep them all, in case of injuries, or trade either DeSmith or Montembeault and get a considerable return.
We're eager to see how things will turn out for the Canadiens' goaltending unit.
