NHL Stars Voice Concern Over Treatment of Rookie Connor Bedard
These NHL stars were quick to voice their concern for fellow NHLer Connor Bedard and how he has been treated over the course of his very young career.
Matthews Calls Out NHL for Taking Bedard on the Full Circus
Before last night's game against the Blackhawks, Auston Matthews shared some criticism of the NHL and how much attention they are giving Bedard. He thinks that it is a lot, and Bedard probably just wants to play hockey.
"They certainly started him off on the all-circus tour here. It's a lot, but I think in the end, you just want to play hockey. That's what's most important."
Matthews isn't wrong, the NHL is certainly taking advantage of Bedard's hype to increase ratings. Not only did they have him playing Crosby in his first game, but they also accompanied it with a full-blown interview beforehand. Players have also called out how many in-game interviews he is forced to do.
"He does way too many in-game interviews and stuff. I think that they need to find a way to just let him play. I think he understands his role as a major ambassador for the game of hockey and he's handling it so well. He doesn't seem to be phased by it but I think that it can be a little much for him at times. He doesn't say that but it feels like it is."
Others Agree that The Attention isn't Fair for an 18-Year-Old
Others on X.com have also called out the NHL for their treatment of the 18-year-old. This includes former NHLer Mark Methot, who had some hilarious comments on the matter.
Totally agree. He's 18 years old! I was still playing in London living in my billets basement, addicted to MSN messenger and sleeping on a waterbed.
I couldn't imagine the pressure he's under right now.
As for Bedard, he seems to be taking the attention just fine, recording 3 points in his first 4 games played with the Blackhawks.
