Over the past week, the NHL made a ruling on Shane Wright that allowed him to return to the AHL if he doesn't make the Kraken roster this year, but seemingly, have made another separate ruling for a different team.

A surprise ruling

A ruling on this is necessary because the NHL and CHL have an agreement that if a player is eligible to remain at the junior level, he must do so, unless the NHL grants an exemption.

After tearing up the OHL a year ago, the two sides agreed for Shane Wright, but in the case of Matt Savoie of the Buffalo Sabres, a different ruling has been made, and he will now need to return to the WHL for 2023-24 unless he makes the Sabres roster.

Preferential treatment

In 127 games with the Winnipeg Ice over the past two years, Savoie has tallied 73 goals and 185 points, but at 19-years old, he remains eligible for the WHL, and instead of improving his development in the AHL, he'll be forced to once again join the WHL in 2023-24.

There's a chance the NHL takes a look at this again over the coming weeks, but right now, it appears as though the Sabres are being unfairly treated in this ruling, and if not, it's something that needs to change, and it's clear that Savoie is ready to take the next step in his career.
