Sabres Star Dylan Cozens Has Been Traded
The NHL Trade Deadline has started off a bit slowly for 2025, but we have the first reported deal of the day and it's certainly a big one to kick things off.
It's March 7, which can only mean one thing: NHL Trade Deadline day! Things are projected to be hectic as teams are scrambling to find the best last minute additions to the roster.
While Thursday saw a massive
Brock Nelson trade, Friday was a pretty quiet morning. That was until two Atlantic rivals decided to pull off a blockbuster.
It's been reported that the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres have a trade package in place entered around Sabres star forward
Dylan Cozens.
There were previously some talks between the two clubs involving pieces
Josh Norris and
Jacob Bernard-Docker going to Buffalo as part of a package as well.
NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun also echoed the sentiment that a trade between the two is in the works, and with two prominent insiders coming to the same conclusion, it's very likely that we're just waiting for the trade to be finalized and announced by both teams.
The trade has now been made official with the full package including Buffalo's 2026 2nd round pick.
Senators GM Steve Staios has also reportedly had a press conference scheduled for 11AM however delayed whatever announcement he was going to make.
Cozens, 24, has 31 points in 61 games this season for the Sabres (11G, 20A).
He joins a Senators team who is trying to make a late season push for the playoffs and brings a lot of extra firepower for a team already employing the likes of
Tim Stutzle,
Brady Tkachuk, and
Drake Batherson.
The Senators get a future star for the next several seasons, and it could be a move that makes their life in the Atlantic Division a lot easier.
Heading the other way is
Norris, a young two-way forward who has dealt with some injuries however is already a former 35-goal scorer. This season he has 33 points in 53 games (20G, 13A) and has five years left on his deal; much like Cozens.
Bernard-Docker, the Sens' 26th overall pick in 2018 has 20 points in 128 games for the team over his career, and hasn't found a spot this season even though he played in 72 games for the team last year.
Only 24, he, along with Norris, give the Sabres a quietly good set of young forwards that also includes JJ Peterka,
Tage Thompson, and
Jack Quinn as well as potential superstar Jiri Kulich.
Both teams improve in different ways. Buffalo gets two young forwards who they can build the team around for the next few seasons in addition to a premium pick.
Ottawa gets a huge improvement up front, and with a wide open Atlantic Division, this could be the move that pushes them to that next level.
It's the first big deal of the day with several more expected. Buckle up fans, it's the most exciting time of the year.
