Massive Potential Trade Could be On the Horizon Between the Leafs and Penguins
The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the teams that everyone is keeping their eye on at the deadline, and now a new trade partner may have just emerged in the Penguins.
Penguins Could Be Looking to Move A Goaltender Ahead of Deadline
The Pittsburgh Penguins are dropping out of this year's playoff picture, slowly but surely. With hopes of a run going down, they are likely going to start retooling, which means the parting ways of several assets. This could include goaltenders
Tristan Jarry or
Alex Nedeljkovic.
According to Yohe of the Athletic, the Penguins are looking to make a trade, and they could have some interest from the Leafs.
"The Penguins almost certainly won't make the playoffs at this point, and right now, their team strength is goaltending," wrote Yohe in The Athletic. "I could see Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic being moved before the deadline."
"Many teams — Toronto, Carolina and Colorado, among many others — could use a boast between the pipes and might be willing to pay quite a price for Jarry or Nedeljkovic," wrote Yohe.
Leafs Could Use Some Extra Help But Have One Too Many Goaltenders Already
The Leafs are in an interesting position between the pipes. they have three solid options in
Ilya Samsonov, Martin Jones, and
Joseph Woll, however, any combination of the two likely isn't strong enough to be the foundation for a long cup run, unless one gets hot.
For that reason, the Leafs could look to go after Jarry, however, they would have to get rid of one of their goaltenders in exchange. They could look at a blockbuster deal involving Woll and Jarry, and other aging assets from the Pens, however, that would be a major, all-in-type risk for the Leafs to lose Woll.
We will see how this shakes out.
