The Toronto Maple Leafs are dealing Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for two third-round draft picks.

Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday afternoon that the Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenceman Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for two third-round picks with the Maple Leafs confirming the deal as they receive the 73rd and 76th overall picks in this year's draft.

Carlo had been subject to heavy trade rumours recently, and the Maple Leafs pulled the trigger on trading away one of their toughest acquisitions. Tough not for the on-ice production but the fact Toronto paid such a hefty price for him and they really only got a couple of mid-tier picks in return.

Carlo had seven assists in 55 games for the Maple Leafs last season, and he is owed $3.485-million for the next year.

Toronto finally rids themselves of the worst Brad Treliving trade

All credit to Carlo for giving it his all, and he couldn't exactly be faulted for his injury that kept him out as it was a reaction to a previous surgery and no one has the foresight to know that ahead of time.

But he never really fit in with the club since he arrived and his role of helping to protect Morgan Rielly and provide some extra shutdown defence never really came to fruition. Unlike Boston, Carlo felt like a porous player who let the opposition get past him with ease.

Brad Treliving traded Fraser Minten and the team's 2026 first-round pick. Now, they absolutely pulled out a stunning win of the draft lottery and got Gavin McKenna, but losing Minten - who is going to be a stud 2C for years to come - was a heavy pill to swallow.

The fact he did it with an hour left to go at the deadline in 2024-25 didn't help matters and it shows that he was desperate to give Toronto any type of help and he didn't care about the price. Fans hated it, analysts hated it, and that Hail Mary attempt to get better just sailed wide.

Obviously the Blues were rich with draft picks and had no issues giving away a couple third-rounders for the sake of Carlo. He'll get a fresh start and not have as much pressure on him, and for the Blues they essentially bring in a younger Justin Holl.

Right now the team seems to have added Carlo as one of the last pieces as they still employ Torey Krug (though injured), Philip Broberg, Colton Parayko, Cam Fowler, and Tyler Tucker.

More details to come.
