The Toronto Maple Leafs made a very savvy deal on Monday, acquiring forward Matias Maccelli from the Utah Mammoth for a conditional 3rd-round pick.
The Maple Leafs were busy on Monday, and among the rumors of a
Mitch Marner to Vegas deal, they decided to make another trade in the interim.
The Leafs are sending a conditional 3rd-round pick to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for forward Matias Maccelli.
The move was announced by NHL Insider Darren Dreger on X, and the return to the Mammoth was confirmed by NHL Insider Chris Johnston on X as well.
The condition is that if Maccelli scores 51 or more points in 2025-26, and Toronto qualifies for the playoffs, that 3rd-rounder turns into a 2029 2nd-round pick.
Maccelli will be a fantastic addition to a Toronto team needing not only an identity change, but some much needed secondary scoring; Maccelli had a rough season in Utah but does have 130 points in 224 career games (37G, 93A).
How Matias Maccelli can help the Maple Leafs
One of the bright spots of the deal is the fact that Maccelli is only 24, and his cap hit is only $3.425-million for the next season before he becomes an RFA.
There's no guarantees he will explode offensively, but he has the potential and perhaps playing for a perennial playoff team will give him some motivation.
He also offers a highly energetic defensive game, and has pretty solid possession numbers that have steadily improved over his short career. While it's a bit odd considering that he's only 5'11, he has heart and grit but most importantly: the passion.
Most likely seeing himself in a third-line role, if the Maple Leafs are able to acquire
Nicolas Roy from the Golden Knights in the Marner deal, that would give Maccelli a chance to have two playmakers at his disposal with Roy and
John Tavares.
He's also got some pretty slick hands too.
Maccelli was drafted 98th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2019, and the Turku, Finland native shares the same hometown as Saku and Mikko Koivu, Mikka Kiprusoff, and
Rasmus Ristolainen.
He had been tossed around in trade rumors at the deadline, but it looked like Utah wanted to hang onto him until something better developed, and their loss is Toronto's gain.
At only 24, he gives Brad Treliving his prime years (should he re-sign) and would be a stark improvement over Nick Robertson defensively, plus he has the offensive capabilities needed to provide the same amount of scoring.
Even though we are still a day away from the opening of free agency, so far it seems like the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to get a head start; and they did so pretty cheaply.
