While the news quieted down a bit regarding the Mitch Marner to Vegas trade situation, people were speculating whether or not certain pieces were still going to be involved, but with
Vegas trading Nicolas Hague to the
Nashville Predators, that put the trade in a bit of jeopardy.
There was still
Nicolas Roy available, and he would no doubt at least bring in a solid asset to replace some of Marner's offense, without leaving the Leafs empty-handed.
Marner trade still happening: Elliotte Friedman
Though nothing has materialized yet, Elliotte Friedman has a hunch that the trade is going to be completed in due time. Speaking on The FAN Hockey Show on Monday, the NHL Insider believes that a deal will get done, it's just a matter of time.
He also mentioned that if a trade were to go through, then Marner would be signing for a long-term extension, and not the supposed four-year stint he was rumoured to be signing for.
It's nothing concrete, but as of now, there seems to be a lot of smoke and in short order, we might see a deal that sets the hockey world on fire.
Toronto finds a silver lining in messy Mitch Marner situation
It would be astounding to see such a turnaround in the past couple of weeks considering we've seen Marner decline several trades previously, was pretty much resigned to leaving, and was even seen spotted looking at a new potential home in Vegas.
All signs pointed to Marner not wanting to work with the team, and while it may just be a way for him to
save a bit of face considering how much backlash he would get, at least there's something positive he can do on his way out; as messy a situation as it's been.
But while he's on the way out, it looks like Roy will be coming in. He's 28, and while he doesn't have that offensive stardom of Marner, he's very well equipped as a playmaker, is great at both ends of the ice, he's another big body and most important a center.
If Toronto wants to, they could have Tavares and Roy swap between the 2C and 3C roles depending on the situation.
Roy, 28, had 31 points in 71 games last season, and has 166 points in 369 career games.
Either way, it's a very interesting and exciting time for hockey, and we're just moments away from a Marner trade being executed.
What a way to kick off the summer eh?
