The San Jose Sharks seem intent on moving Erik Karlsson this off-season after a stellar season in 2022-23, and with many suitors, it appears the team have their favourite package in mind.
Toronto Maple Leafs
While it's been reported that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes are the two teams in hottest pursuit of Karlsson, it's not the teams favoured destination, as they are continuing to look at the Toronto Maple Leafs potential package.
The reason for that is the potential to land William Nylander, who could pair nicely with the Sharks young core up front, but at this point in time, there's one thing stopping Toronto from making this move.
What's the holdup?
According to Hockey Insider Eklund, the biggest holdup is the Leafs desire to retain Nylander, as there's seemingly no rush for them to get a deal done.
The big Domino here is Nylander and Toronto. I believe the Sharks like the Leafs package the most, but so far only Pittsburgh and Carolina have actually figured out ways to make the money work. The Leafs can't consider this without moving Nylander and unfortunately for them, everyone knows this, here is no immediately rush yet.
If the two sides can't come to a deal in the coming weeks and months and Karlsson hasn't been moved elsewhere, this is a move to keep an eye on, but for now, it appears to still be a two team race between Pittsburgh and Carolina.
