Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens Complete a Trade: Goaltender Jake Allen Dives Deep, Sharing His Genuine Reactions and Feelings
The Penguins and Canadiens just finished a blockbuster 3-way trade which landed Montreal an additional goaltender. That ended up raising some eyebrows, as Montreal already had their goaltending duo of Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault splitting time.
Who will sit?
GM Kent Hughes, at the trade announcement's press conference, said that he didn't intend to bury newly acquired goalie Casey DeSmith in the minors. That begs the question, who will be sent down?
In a recent interview, Jake Allen shared his thoughts on the current goaltending situation in Montreal and bringing in another goalie.
"There are only 23 players on a roster. It will be up to them to decide if they want to waste a spot on an extra goaltender or not. But I think in the future, there will be more and more goaltenders who play during the season, not just two. It's the very nature of the position."
"The game is so fast. Injuries are becoming more frequent because young players are playing hockey more and more often. The body accumulates mileage at a younger age. I think in the future, we will see three or four goalies being used very regularly throughout the year."
Three Goalies?
Allen is right, the trend of goaltender usage is changing in the NHL, as more goalies are used per year than ever before. There could be an interesting way of splitting time between the three goalies so that they play on a rotational basis until a valuable trade comes forward.
Allen seems up to the task, as well, stating that he would be ready for the competition that three goalies bring.
"I've never been in such a situation before, but at the same time, it will be a fun competition, and I'm looking forward to being a part of it."
Either way, Hughes has enough time to make this work, and an extra goalie is never an issue as injuries come forward during a season.
