Major Trade Brewing Between Eastern Conference Rivals
The Ottawa Senators are in a bit of a tough spot with their salary cap. This could come in the way of signing one of their top young players, Shane Pinto. In order to create cap space, Pierre Dorion and the Sens will need to get rid of money somewhere.
The Philadelphia Flyers are also in a tough spot, but it's not related to money; fans are preparing to watch their team lose for at least another year. However, that doesn't mean they shouldn't try to get players, especially if they can get a good deal.
The Flyers could have the solution to the Sens' problems.
Trade Incoming Between Senators and Flyers Involving Joseph?
Daniel Briere and the Flyers are reportedly interested in forward Mathieu Joseph.
Joseph, 26, has three seasons left on his $3M AAV contract, making this a lot harder for the Senators. If he leaves Ottawa, the Sens will be able to sign Pinto.
However, a new development reported by Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts confirms that the Sens will need to sweeten the deal to get rid of Joseph and his contract.
Here's what Friedman said:
"The good thing for Ottawa is Philadelphia likes Mathieu Joseph as a player. They see a fit. The bad news is that it doesn't mean the Flyers will make it easy. They've got the leverage and aren't afraid to use it. They want a high-level prospect or maybe the first-rounder sent by Detroit in the Alex DeBrincat trade. To this point, Ottawa's not willing to do that. It's a poker game. San Jose is another team I've wondered about." He confirmed that the Flyers are interested in Joseph but that they also have the leverage to get another asset in the deal. But Ottawa isn't willing to send a first-round pick or a high-level prospect to make it happen. Fortunately, the San Jose Sharks could also be interested. The Sens could decide to look somewhere else if they deem the Flyers' asks too much.
