He revealed that the deal initially started with a fifth-round pick, but the Los Angeles Kings needed to move Brendan Lemieux to acquire MacEwen. Fletcher decided to make the process easier for the Kings and offered to take Lemieux instead.
Chuck Fletcher said the Zack MacEwen deal originally started with the fifth-round pick. But the Kings needed to move Brendan Lemieux to get MacEwen. So Fletcher "thought I'd make it easy on them" and said he could just take him and give him a 20-game tryout.
Selected as the 31st overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, Brendan Lemieux was once considered a top prospect. Throughout his career, some General Managers have raised concerns about Lemieux's attitude, which may have contributed to his frequent moves between teams.
