We Finally Know Who Botched the National Anthem, And She's the Girlfriend of a Famous Singer
The 4 Nations Finals had some controversy even before the game when singer Chantal Kreviazuk altered the lyrics to 'O Canada' as a symbol of Canadian pride.
But Canadians woke up on Friday as the champions after
Connor McDavid sealed the deal on Thursday against Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off Finals, scoring the OT winner and becoming an instant hero.
But even before the dramatic finish, the game saw some controversy as singer Chantal Kreviazuk ended up altering the lyrics to 'O Canada' and it's caused a lot of debate amongst people.
The singer changed the lyrics "In all of us command" to "That only us command" as a symbol of protest against the current tension between the US and Canada, as well as instilling a bit more Canadian pride ahead of such a momentous game.
To say it drew a mixed reaction would be an understatement.
Some people were even clamouring for Celine Dion to come back and do the anthem, although with her current health issues that was never going to be in consideration.
'O Canada' already found itself with some controversy when the lyrics that Kreviazuk changed were coincidentally, also altered but officially by the Canadian Government.
The original lyrics were "In all thy sons command" and was changed to "In all of us command" as a way to add inclusion to the vast population of Canada, and wasn't celebrated at the time, though that has since become an non-issue.
Kreviazuk is a three-time Juno Award winner, and along with her husband Raine Maida; the lead singer for Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace, received the Order of Canada in 2014 for their humanitarian and charity work.
It was a bold move from Kreviazuk to alter the anthem even if it was intentional. Though controversial, nothing can change the fact that for one night only there was a bit of extra Canadian pride.
But this shouldn't overshadow the fact that Canada won. We should all feel a bit prouder today, regardless of a few words being changed.
