A new report from The Fourth Period shows that the Columbus Blue Jackets were trying to package Yegor Chinakhov as a way to acquire star defenseman Noah Dobson.

It was a stunning blockbuster trade between the New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens this summer, seeing the Habs pick up star defenseman Noah Dobson in a move that makes them infinitely better; and a scary potential playoff opponent.

Columbus wanted Dobson badly, offered Chinakhov

Teams were disappointed they missed our on the chance to acquire him, and though it may have cost Montreal a lot, it was worth it.
However according to The Fourth Period, the Blue Jackets were pushing hard to bring Dobson in:
The Blue Jackets tried to include Chinakhov in a package for defenceman Noah Dobson before the New York Islanders traded the blueliner to the Montreal Canadiens.

It's hard to imagine Chinakhov as anything but a premium asset, especially for a New York team that is lacking that true punch offensively, especially with Brock Nelson leaving town.
Chinakhov, 24, had 15 points in only 30 games last season (7 goals, 8 assists) but had a 16-goal, 29-point season in 2023-24 and did so in only 15:10 TOI.
The deal Montreal gave was better (Emil Heineman and two 2025 first-rounders) to the naked eye though we don't know if other picks or players were part of a potential deal, but clearly Dobson was on their radar.

What the Maple Leafs Would Need to Offer to Land Yegor Chinakhov

But with them missing out on Dobson, and still trying to find a trade partner for Chinakhov, things might be picking up.
If the team is desperate to give in to Chinakhov's trade demands, then teams like Toronto need to jump on a potential deal.
What it will take is another story, however with Dobson being the intended target we have an inkling of what Brad Treliving could do.
The team has a few potential young defenders who the Blue Jackets could go after, including Ben Danford and another Noah, this time Noah Chadwick.
Both players ooze potential and though they may be close to a spot now; Toronto's logjam on the blueline makes things tough.
That won't be enough however, and the team will probably need to package someone like Nicholas Robertson or Bobby McMann to get a deal done.
They could also see if Brandon Carlo is of any interest to GM Don Waddell, and though he's not too offensively minded; he's still a great player to have.
So it's going to take several different moving pieces to make a trade worthy enough to satisfy Columbus.
Though, this probably would have been a bit easier had Toronto had any real assets to trade away.
