Former Maple Leafs Coach Officially Fired From Current NHL Role
Former Maple Leafs coach Greg Cronin found himself unemployed on Saturday after the Anaheim Ducks decided to let him go after a disappointing season.
Cronin spent two years as Ducks head coach, amassing a 62-87-15 record and had a huge improvement this year over 2023-24. It's a bit unfortunate given that he looked like he was guiding Anaheim towards a better future, but it's clear they wanted a new vision behind the bench.
He joined the Maple Leafs organization in 2011 after spending six seasons with the Northeastern University Huskies, and ended up sticking with the team until 2014, where he joined the New York Islanders.
He has been coaching since 1987-88 in the NCAA, was an assistant with the Islanders from 1998-2003, went back to coaching at the collegiate level, and earned his first head coaching job with the Anaheim Ducks in the summer of 2023.
Cronin joins several coaches who were fired this season. John Tortorella, Luke Richardson, Derek Lalonde, and Jim Montgomery all were let go at various points this season, however Montgomery has since emerged as St. Louis' head coach and led them into the playoffs after a brutal start.
We don't know if Cronin will find a job with an NHL team in the near future, however there is a chance that he may head back to the NCAA where he ended up being very successful.
It's a shame that Cronin was fired, as he looked like he was able to bring Anaheim some more success if given the time, but it looks like it'll need to be a new team or league for Cronin to coach in for now.
