NHL Insider Darren Dreger revealed the issues that could prevent Nikolaj Ehlers from signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs in free agency.
There's still lots of time, it was only the first day, however the league saw a ton of faces switching places, and signing for highly lucrative deals. The Leafs don't have a ton of cap to work with, but with a few moves they can open up enough space in order to bring that star player in.
Nikolaj Ehlers might want to avoid the spotlight: Darren Dreger
The biggest fish on the market now is Nikolaj Ehlers, who is certainly going to be offered a hefty sum this summer, and if the Maple Leafs want a chance to sign him, they need to make sure they put out a worthwhile offer.
I'm sure Brad Treliving has thrown in hat in the ring on Nikolaj Ehlers, I don't think Nikolaj Ehlers wants to play in Toronto, I think he wants to literally stay out of the spotlight, I mean he found it bright at times in Winnipeg.
Much like the pressure Mitch Marner felt (and was quickly ready to get away from), Ehlers will have the microscope on him at all times, and might not want to deal with that constant pressure to perform at an elite level.
There's no doubt there's a certain prestige to playing for the Maple Leafs, but with that comes an ungodly amount of expectations. The media is relentless when it comes to mistakes, the cameras are always rolling, and the fanbase is as rabid and passionate as ever; the polar opposite for the quiet and reserved Ehlers.
That's a huge mental block to get over, and while Marner did shine a lot in Toronto, there's no guarantees Ehlers can do the same.
Toronto should still try and convince Ehlers to sign
But if he were to be added, boy would the Maple Leafs be sitting pretty.
Ehlers, 29, had 63 points in 69 games last season (24G, 39A) and has been as reliable as can be for the Jets since being drafted 9th overall in 2014; one spot behind Toronto's
William Nylander.
In 674 games, he's amassed 520 points (225G, 295A), a plus-106 rating, and only 222 PIM. A savvy defender, Ehlers uses his speed and hands to quickly steal the puck and start the offense in transition.
He clearly wants to win, and has mentioned going to a winning market is key. Leaving Winnipeg (a winning team) is a bit perplexing, but there's a market for him no doubt.
Ehlers makes any top-six better, and in the case of the Maple Leafs, allow them to replace Marner's offense without sacrificing defense and giving them that DNA change they've talked about all summer.
But it's going to take a lot of convincing, and even then their proposal may fall on deaf ears.
