Big Development Emerges Ahead of Mitch Marner's Free Agency Meetings

NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman ended up mentioning in his 32 Thoughts blog that the Carolina Hurricanes are expected to put everything they have into signing Mitch Marner.
The
rumors surrounding Mitch Marner and where he is going to end up this summer have been as rampant as ever. It seems like every day there's a new report that refutes the old one, and we really have no idea what's happening until he puts pen to paper.
But with all the talk about where he'll go, we've heard mostly about Los Angeles and Vegas as the top destinations to land Marner, but anything is technically possible.
Carolina to bring a storm this offseason in order to sign Mitch Marner
Expect a lot of developments over the next two weeks. Barring a shift in approach, Carolina is expected to go all-in. Vegas is also a team to watch, along with several other aggressive Western Conference clubs. - Elliotte Friedman
It isn't shocking to see the Hurricanes going after Marner again, considering they went after him at the trade deadline and couldn't land him after Marner rejected the deal.
What makes him want to head there now is anyone's guess, though that trade denial may have been a bit of petty revenge on behalf of Marner, and nothing to do with Carolina as a destination.
Do the Maple Leafs even have a chance to sign Marner back?
I mean, sure? This is the NHL after all and truly anything can happen but it's extremely unlikely.
The frosty relationship between the Leafs management and Marner stems back awhile, and the fact that the soon to be former forward felt slighted about losing out the potential captaincy; it's almost a foregone conclusion.
What's puzzling though is that Marner has granted the Maple Leafs a meeting for July 1, and whether it's to offer closure, or genuinely entertain an offer, he's still giving them some benefit of the doubt.
But for
Marner, who scored 102 points this year (27G, 75A) he is going to follow the trail of dollars to his next destination, and if Friedman is correct, it'll land him right back in the Eastern Conference.
