Bill Guerin, the Wild's general manager, bought out Parise and Suter's exorbitant contracts earlier this offseason.
When you consider that Parise was linked to the Islanders in trade discussions for the 2020-21 season, this isn't shocking. It also makes sense given that during their time together with the New Jersey Devils, Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello was the one who drafted Parise and made him captain. But Suter, in my opinion, is the real star here. Parise can likely add depth, but Suter's game still has some venom to it. He's no longer the Norris Trophy favorite he was earlier in his NHL career, but he's still a valuable contributor on the back end of a team. To be honest, he'd be a wonderful match for the Islanders under head coach Barry Trotz.
If Parise and Suter aren't signed to long-term, high-dollar contracts, their signings must be viewed as a major coup for Lamoriello and the Islanders. Keep an eye out for updates.
