The alternative is to run a full audible and go much bolder in net.
If you feel you're still truly exposed with the unpredictability of Murray and an unproven playoff performer in Samsonov, who still might not be ready for prime time, then you push for Vancouver's Thatcher Demko or Juuse Saros in Nashville. Many believe Saros will be available when the Predators finally slip out of playoff contention in two or three weeks. Both are 27 years old and locked into extended contracts with very reasonable $5-million (U.S.) cap hits.
Either one could easily end the Leafs' goalie controversies for the next few years. And more important, either one could boost team confidence that goes beyond anything Murray or Samsonov can provide.
