Their son's name honours Elvis Merzlikins' friend and teammate Matiss Kivlenieks, who died in a July fireworks accident. Elvis Merzlikins claimed during Matiss Kivlenieks' memorial that Matiss had saved his life, his wife's life, and his unborn son's life. Then he said his son's middle name will be Matiss.
