According to what Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reports, at the trade deadline, when Kent Hughes announced the trades to Martin St. Louis, he was literally on his backside.
"Announcing to Lehkonen that he had transferred was not easy for Hughes. Neither was having to tell the head coach. Martin St. Louis was devastated."
"According to Hughes, the coaching staff was disappointed to lose Brett Kulak earlier in the day on deadline day." Pierre LeBrun In an interview with Pierre LeBrun, Hughes said he lied to his coaches.
« I went downstairs to tell them that we had traded Kulak and the coaches were bummed. So I said, ''The good news is we're not trading Lehky.'' I think we traded Lehky about 15 minutes before the deadline. I went back into my office and Joe called back. And there I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I think at this point we have to do it.'"
"I went back down (to the coaches' room) and said, 'I lied.'" - Kent Hughes
So it was clear, Hughes didn't want to trade Lehkonen, but he couldn't refuse the offer.
