Insiders Believe William Nylander Will Not Re-Sign In Toronto

Nylander has said he wants to sign, and GM Brad Treliving has said the Maple Leafs organization wants to sign him, but the mecca of hockey media that is Toronto will remain unruly until he signs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs' cap is always brushing against the upper limit, and this season was no different. Next season, the salary cap is slated to rise at least $4 million, and Auston Matthews' raise is only approximately an extra $1.61 million against the cap.

William Nylander has a current cap hit of $6.96 million, and his rumoured ask is north of $9 million. It can fit within the cap next season, but the Toronto Maple Leafs will need some cap magic to make it all work. What can help is that John Tavares and Mitch Marner's deals both expire at the end of next season, and while one will be looking for similar (or more) money, the other may settle for less.

Michael Rupp, Tony Luftman, and the one they call "Conny" all believe that he will not sign in Toronto because he can get more money elsewhere. Rupp and Conny especially think that Nylander has priced himself out of Toronto and that they will trade him within the season.

Both Rupp and Conny think that Nylander will be able to get paid $10 million or more at the UFA market, and that you cannot have too few players making too much money.
