With the departure of Jeff Petry, Kent Hughes has managed to free up some space on the team's payroll.
However, over the next two years, the Habs' GM will be able to do whatever he wants and will have free rein.
Dadonov ($5M), Drouin ($5.5M), Allen ($2.875M) and Byron ($3.4M) will see their contracts expire at the end of next season.
As for Mike Hoffman ($4.5M), Edmundson ($3.5M) and Alzner ($833,000 buyout), there are two years left before their deals are up.
Clearly, within the next two years, Hughes will have managed to free up a lot of payroll space and will be able to move on to the next steps in the rebuilding plan.
