In Sweden's 5th Tier Hockey League, a crazy incident is going viral that saw a player lay a huge hit on a referee. During the play, a forward dumps the puck into the corner. As the defenseman pivots to go after the puck, the forward stops and turns away. The defenseman mistakes the referee as the opposing player and follows through on a massive hit to the unexpecting referee.
The video doesn't do much to absolve the player from blame. While it makes some sense that the player could have believed the referee was the opponent, it seems like a bit of a stretch given how much he followed through on the hit.
After the game, the player commented on the incident and claimed that it was a complete accident and that he mistook the referee for his opponent and was already in the process of laying the hit. However, he also took the opportunity to say how the referee was in the way the entire night.
Vita hästen player Casper Gilberg brakes the referee's arm with a hit in the swedish 5th division.

There was no penalty on the play, surprisingly, and there hasn't been any additional information on whether the player will be punished for the play. We hope for a speedy recovery for the referee.
