As we reported on Saturday, the Carolina Hurricanes have made a hostile offer to the Habs Finnish forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi. A one season contract worth 6.1 million dollars.

The compensation that will go to the Habs if they decide not to match Carolina's hostile offer to KK is a first round pick and a third round pick.
More and more information is coming out about this story.
In particular, Sportsnet reporter Elliotte Friedman has given us some very interesting information on this issue.
Friedman learned that the Canes have already discussed with Jesperi Kotkaniemi about a potential long-term contract. They would have talked about it before signing the 1 year contract at 6.1 million, so we can think that they want to make up for it with the long term contract, by saving money on it.
Now, former NHLer and current 91.9 Sports host Georges Laraque mentions that according to his information, Jesperi Kotkaniemi would have agreed with the Carolina Hurricanes on the terms of a long-term contract, a contract extension even before knowing if the CH matches the hostile offer or not.
"If the Habs don't match the Hurricanes' offer, KK would agree with the Canes on the terms of a contract extension that would result in his salary being $4M per season in the medium term."
If Georges Laraque's information is ever confirmed, there should be an official announcement to that effect around January 1, 2022.
