Alex Ovechkin is on route to becoming the greatest goalscorer in NHL history. He's a mere 98 goals away from holding the all-time scoring title, and with his pace as it stands, he should hit it.
A new bombshell however suggests that Ovechkin may not hit that target as a member of the Washington Capitals.
Ovechkin has told management he wouldn't allow himself to be part of a rebuild. If this is the route Washington chooses to take over the four remaining years of Ovechkin's contract, it is likely Ovechkin will request a trade.
No player of Ovechkin's calibre has been traded in a very long time. It would be an absolute blockbuster, and it would be the foundation of a new era in Washington. An era without their captain, their franchise face, and their greatest player off all time.
