The excellent Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now has made a prediction about the future contract of the Canadiens' small forward, Cole Caufield.
Cole will become an RFA at the end of next season.
D'Amico would give Cole Caufield six years and $6.5M per year. What did he base this on?
He based it on the deals of Nikolaj Ehlers (seven years, $6 million a year), Clayton Keller (eight years, $7.15 million a year) and Jake Guentzel (five years, $6 million a year).
Yes he looked at the number of years and the annual amount, but more importantly the percentage of the payroll that the pacts represent.
These three agreements are around 8%, which would be $6.6 million with the current payroll. So with $6.5 million, it was to make a round number.
