Mitch Marner commented on his decision to leave the Maple Leafs and join the Vegas Golden Knights in free agency.

After signing a massive $96-million extension with the Vegas Golden Knights after being traded by the Maple Leafs, Mitch Marner got his first taste of wearing a Golden Knights jersey earlier on Tuesday, solidifying his new start in Sin City where he's expected to be a huge part of their Stanley Cup push.

Marner comments on negotiation process with Vegas

But he took the time to comment on the decision making process, and had a multitude of things to say regarding going to Vegas:
It was really tough to leave Toronto, to be honest. I didn't think it would ever really come to that day.
It did seem like Marner was all-in on trying to bring a Cup to the Maple Leafs, and he admitted in his farewell address on Tuesday that he was disappointed in the fact that he couldn't find success in Toronto.
But it also seems like he came to terms with moving on, and mentioned Vegas being at the top of his list, as was so highly rumored for weeks:
It was a wild one. There were certainly a few teams who I was interested in but [Vegas]; this was a spot that was very high on my list.
He also mentioned that winning a Cup was still at the forefront of his goals, and thought Vegas offered the best chance for that, in addition to being a new start for his family:
You want to be in a place where you can win a Cup. Since this team entered the league, it's pushed the boundaries.

Marner was Toronto focused until he wasn't

It also was apparent that Marner was solely focused on hockey in Toronto this season with his new family, and admitted that being a deadline rental (aka the nixed Mikko Rantanen deal) wasn't in his interest.
Marner secured the bag this offseason off the back of 741 points in 657 games for the Maple Leafs, ranking in several of the franchises top levels, and bringing a dynamic force to the ice every night he played.
But for now, it seems like Vegas is going to be home sweet home for Marner and his family for the long-haul.
He's hoping it's a gamble that pays off in Sin City.
