The Toronto Maple Leafs organization ended up parting ways with Matt Anderson, a long-time Marlies player after signing NCAA standout John Prokop.
While the Maple Leafs solidified their future corps with a bevy of free agent signings including that of Borya Valis, Luke Haymes, Ryan Kirwan, and John Prokop; the future is looking bright with a restocked pool of prospects ready to prove their worth.
It's the latter though that created a move for the team, as the Toronto Marlies; the Leafs' AHL affiliate, announced they would be terminating the contract of long-time defenseman Matt Anderson in order to make room for Prokop.
Anderson, 25, is a six-foot tall defender who hails from Shakopee, MN. He played five seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he registered 28 points (3G, 25A) in 181 games for the team.
He parlayed that performance into an ECHL contract with the South Carolina Stingrays, the affiliate of the Washington Capitals. He spent two seasons there and had 30 points in 62 games.
His best season game with Toledo, where he poured in 34 points (13G, 21A) and was showing signs of potentially fighting for an NHL deal. That never happened and he wound up with the Marlies.
Removing Anderson in favor of Prokop is the right move ultimately for the team, and the potential that the new collegiate signing has far outweighs whatever Anderson could do.
This may be the end of the line for Matt Anderson, but if he can find his stroke much like he did with Toledo; he could find himself on a team next season.
