James Reimer's time with the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end after the team announced they have released him from his PTO on Monday.

Although it was a heartwarming reunion between James Reimer and the Toronto Maple Leafs, their partnership came to an abrupt end on Monday after the team announced they had released him from his professional tryout.

James Reimer's Short Return to Toronto Comes to an End

Reimer was a stop-gap option during Joseph Woll's absence, however with the Maple Leafs claiming goaltender Cayden Primeau; a player ten years his junior, off waivers Monday afternoon; there was no spot for Reimer.
He appeared in one preseason game, giving up three goals and suffering a 6-5 OT loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Reimer will now be free to sign with any team who has interest should he so choose to, and it's very likely that he'll be picked up at some point due to injuries, and he often finds a job at some point in the season.
Last season, Reimer posted a 10-10-2 record with a 3.04 GAA and .896 SV%.
Fans of the Maple Leafs would be very familiar with Reimer as he spent six seasons with the club after being drafted 99th overall in 2006. In those half-dozen years, he posted a 85-76-23 record with a 2.83 GAA and a .914 SV%.

What Reimer's Release Means for the Maple Leafs' Goaltending Depth

Losing Reimer might hurt in the sentimental department however the team is already stacked with solid goaltending, and his addition was more just a band-aid solution rather than a long-term one.
Anthony Stolarz is going to start, Dennis Hildeby or Cayden Primeau will back him up, and then Stolarz and Joseph Woll will split duties once the latter returns from his lease of absence.
But you've also got Artur Akhtyamov and Ken Appleby with the Marlies, and Reimer's age is certainly a factor regardless of his experience; there's too many younger goaltenders to warrant keeping him around.
Odds are some team will take a look at Reimer and he won't be unemployed for long, but when it comes to sticking around Toronto it was simply a cup of coffee with an old friend.
