Toronto Maple Leafs Officially Land 23-Year-Old Free Agent
With the Leafs already signing a trio of college players the past week or so, Brad Treliving
hasn't stopped trying to make his team better even after the deadline. Using these signings to recoup his farm system, it's a pretty savvy move given their lack of picks.
So it's wild that the team isn't going to stop signing as many players as possible, as the team scooped up Arizona State University winger
Ryan Kirwan, signing him to a two-year deal with
the Toronto Marlies.
The move was announced officially by the team on Saturday evening, which follows a report from Elliotte Friedman that the Leafs were interested in the forward.
Kirwan was a hero for Arizona State, leading the school to their first semi-final in their history, and being a winger with a lot of offensive upside.
He had 26 goals in 37 games for Arizona State, and had a combined 69 points in 100 games with the school.
He certainly fits the criteria for a Brad Treliving signing, standing 6'2 and 195 pounds. The 23-year old from DeWitt, NY certainly picked up his game from when he was a member of Penn State.
His best season there came last season, and must have had a serious amount of progression; doubling that in 2024-25 and playing himself into a pro deal.
Toronto has clearly had success with college players in recent years, with
Bobby McMann and
Matthew Knies being two who have come out of the blue and become either a bonafide star or darn close to it.
It's great that Toronto has the ability to recover their prospects after so much concern about the scarcity after the deadline.
Kudos to Brad Treliving. He may not have made a big splash at the deadline, but maybe he had a different plan all along.
