Maple Leafs Reveal Starting Goaltender, Make Surprising Scratch Against Kings
The Toronto Maple Leafs need a bounce back game against Los Angeles on Saturday, and have decided their starter and scratched a very polarizing forward.
While the sting of a shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks still lingering
in the back of their minds, the Maple Leafs need to press forward with a strong game against the Pacific behemoths known as the Los Angeles Kings.
Faced with a lot of uncertainty heading into the last month of the season, there needs to be some changes if Toronto wants any chance of success.
From goaltending to defense to an inconsistent offense; it's been a rollercoaster for the team recently.
So with the need to succeed, the team has decided the best course of action is to anoint
Anthony Stolarz the starter against the Kings, hoping he can back a renewed Toronto defense, and have decided that Nick Robertson will sit in favor of
Pontus Holmberg.
Holmberg And Stolarz In; Nick Robertson And Joseph Woll Sit
It's presumed that Holmberg will skate with
Scott Laughton and
Max Domi on the third line, though he may be on the fourth if Berube wants to see how
Calle Jarnkrok will do on the third line.
Holmberg has been quiet this season, and hasn't made the impact fans had hoped for since being drafted.
In 58 games this season,
Holmberg has 15 points (6G, 9A) and is a minus-1, but it's his propensity to draw penalties that may have brought him back into the fold.
There's no guarantees in hockey, but Craig Berube is giving it his best shot, and putting his best goalie and penalty drawer in the lineup.
At this point, why not throw stuff at the wall and see if it sticks? It can't get any worse....can it?
