Toronto Maple Leafs officially beginning contract talks with Tyler Bertuzzi
The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially begun contract negotiations with free agent forward Tyler Bertuzzi, according to David Pagnotta.
It's been a year since Tyler Bertuzzi signed his one-year contract with the Maple Leafs. Now, a new report has confirmed that General Manager Brad Treiving has started to negotiate for a new deal with the forward.
Here's what Pagnotta wrote in a post on X:
"It's still very early in the process to project where this will go, but the #LeafsForever have started contract discussions with pending UFA winger Tyler Bertuzzi."
While he had his ups and downs with the Leafs, Bertuzzi had a great year, scoring 43 points.
It has also been reported by AFP Analytics that the Leafs should give him a five-year, $5 million AAV deal, considering his performances and by comparing him with other players in the League, such as Gustav Nyquist, Tyler Toffoli, Nino Niederreiter, and Zach Hyman:
"While fan perception of Bertuzzi was up and down this season due to some lulls in point production, Bertuzzi was a very solid winger who made multiple core members better when they played with him. If they can get him between 5-5.5 AAV, it would be a smart signing. #LeafsForever"
The fact that negotiations have started doesn't mean that they'll reach a deal, but it's a first step.
