The Toronto Maple Leafs know the price if they want to acquire Vincent Trocheck from the Rangers and it looks like New York is coming directly for their future.

Vincent Trocheck would add the perfect help for the Maple Leafs not only as a Max Domi replacement, but be their new 2C who has already got a very good resume. Toronto has checked in on him and view the American as a prime target to boost the lineup however his asking price is going to take a huge chunk out of their pipeline.

Trocheck, 32, is a guy who instantly provides Toronto an elite two-way centre with incredible possession numbers and the defensive acumen to ease the burden on Auston Matthews. He's no slouch on the scoreboard either with 631 points in 868 games and he recently won a gold medal with Matthews during the 2026 Olympics.

At only $5.625-million he's a bargain for what he offers, with the only caveat really being his age and whether he can keep up that level of production as he gets older. But it seems like it's not just age that's a huge factor but also his price.

The Rangers have not budged on Trocheck's price which includes a first, a prospect and an NHL-ready player

Per Mollie Walker of The New York Post, the Maple Leafs have made contact with the Rangers regarding Trocheck, though the asking price from New York leaves a lot to be desired especially from Toronto's point of view:

Toronto has reached out about Trocheck in the wake of Max Domi's back surgery complications. Depending on whether Toronto is on Trocheck's no-trade list and the Pittsburgh native is open to a move to Canada, it could be a fit...since the deadline, the asking price has been at minimum: a first-round pick, a roster player, and a prospect.

It also echoes David Pagnotta's report that the Maple Leafs had interest in Trocheck mid-May:

Chayka cannot fish exclusively in this year's shallow free agent pond, which is why he's already started to explore the trade market with reports of Toronto's interest in Vincent Trocheck popping up this week.

That's a massive asking price but given that there's a lack of a centre market and Trocheck is one of the best and most consistent pivots in the game, of course his price is going to be sky-high.

It may seem like an impossibility for the Maple Leafs, and fans may not want to see another older, aging star being committed to after so much hype about getting younger, faster, and more exciting.

Trocheck gives Toronto everything they need but at the cost of their future

But you can't deny that Trocheck wouldn't be effective, and the need to help Auston Matthews now may be more pivotal than waiting for the future.

If so, then Toronto certainly has the assets. They still hold a 2027 first from the Nic Roy deal and it belongs to Colorado so it's likely not a high selection anyways. Then the roster player is as simple as packaging Nick Robertson in with things. He would fit seamlessly in Mike Sullivan's offence, needs a fresh start, just had a career year and is extremely controllable.

Now comes to the hard part. There's really only one name who would make an impact that should be looked at as trade bait - Ben Danford. He's their best defensive prospect and someone who looks like a solid top-4 NHL player.

But he's also a couple years from really being an NHL mainstay, and with Toronto's window to win in that same timeframe, you have to weigh things. Do you want to win with Matthews and Trocheck and miss out on Danford's potential?

Or would you rather waste your captain's last years with the team and hope that Danford suddenly becomes a superstar? I know what I'd pick, and for a Stanley Cup-starved franchise like Toronto while a legitimately difficult decision; it may be a necessary evil.

Toronto already has the future with Gavin McKenna, and while Danford is a great prospect - Trocheck is too important to the overall picture now.

It's time to make more contact with Chris Drury and the Rangers while presenting them everything they want because New York holds everything they need.
