Brad Marchand is expected to net a multi-year contract above $8M annually, according to a report from Chris Johnston.
Marchand, 37, is expected to take a longer-tern contract that could take him to the end of his NHL career, and would net him a potential final contract at a hefty price.
After 16 seasons as a member of the Boston Bruins, the entirety of his NHL career, Marchand was traded to the Florida Panthers as Boston set into a rebuild and offloaded their longterm star in Marchand.
In 71 games, Marchand had 23 goals and 51 points with both Boston and Florida, with 18 points in 20 games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
With his strong playoff run and as an experienced winger who can still play in the top-six, Marchand is expected to command a hefty payday even past his prime.
Should The Toronto Maple Leafs Go For Brad Marchand?
Brad Marchand is absolutely what the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for, but at the same time a player they may look to avoid.
The Leafs have as of right now the oldest roster in the National Hockey League, and adding Marchand will only add to that further.
Marchand, while still a quality forward, just had his lowest scoring season since the 2015-16 season, in which he had 42 points. At 37, it becomes a question if Marchand despite his usefulness is beginning to show his decline.
At a discount, Marchand potentially not being at his full capability wouldn't be a major issue, but for $8M a season for four-years, until the age of 41, it may be a prime buyout candidate if Marchand quickly falls of the wagon offensively.
While the Toronto Maple Leafs absolutely need a player like Brad Marchand, they may be scared off by the potential cost, and at his age may make it hard to justify the potential ask that will come from Marchand's camp.
If Brad Marchand is the replacement for
Mitch Marner, is he enough of a pure replacement for Toronto to take a gamble on?
Is There Benefit For Toronto To Signing Brad Marchand
While the price tag and age are two major questions for signing Brad Marchand, there is also the factor of him being what the Toronto Maple Leafs need.
Marchand is one of the league's biggest agitators and happy to take on the role of a menace, which Leafs fans know all too well how Marchand likes to play.
Toronto has craved adding some grit and intimidation to their lineup, someone like Brad Marchand. The Leafs have been criticized, even by their own fans, as a team that is timid and doesn't play intense enough, having Marchand would change their culture and reputation as "soft".
Marchand, at least next season, should still be able to play in the Leafs top-six, and could be bought out or traded if things don't go the way the Leafs want.
The Toronto Maple Leafs need and want a player like Brad Marchand, but they may struggle to justify signing a Brad Marchand if things are too much in terms of separation between what he feels he's worth and what Toronto is willing to give.
The Leafs are trying to replace Mitch Marner and add a far more intense player, but with Marchand risk an aging forward who could quickly regress and has shown signs it may happen soon, but on the other hand have the type of physical workhorse that they've seem to lack, and most importantly a proven winning player.
