Edmonton was on the receiving end of a controversial goal that put the Anaheim Ducks up 3-1 in the series; a nightmare scenario Maple Leafs fans know all too well.

On Sunday night, we got some more intense playoff hockey with the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks and it didn't disappoint. After the Oilers took a 2-0 lead, the Ducks fired back with two of their own and things went back and forth until the opening of the overtime period.
It was 2:29 into OT when Ducks forward Ryan Poehling scored the game-winning goal and put the scrappy and young Ducks up 3-1 against Connor McDavid; a situation no one could have foreseen. It put one of the Cup favourites at risk of being taken down, and it could be seen as one of the biggest upsets in a while.

The goal was called good but the replays raised serious questions and no referee was in a clear position to make that call

Though it didn't come without a wave of controversy, as the goal took a long time to be called good, despite being initially called that at first glance. What's getting Edmonton fans up in arms though is the fact that it looks like no one could have made that call in the first place:
We have a photo that shows the closest official was about 25 feet from the net and called it good, which is a bit ridiculous for Oilers fans considering how far he was. Granted, he was the best official with the clearest view of the net itself, but seeing the puck cross especially with it behind the skate of the goalie is really tough:
They had to discuss things on the ice first, then go to a lengthy review and as the video review showed no clear evidence, the situation room in Toronto clarified it was indeed a good goal. That's three different review processes which includes a discussion from three officials who were way out of the view of the goal, and two separate video crews with every angle you could think of.
As you could see, Connor McDavid and the officials had a lengthy discussion afterwards, as you can see the Ducks players celebrating in the foreground; he's no doubt incensed:
But this is something that Toronto fans watching the game know all too well.

Toronto knows the pain of referee discretion; and it cost them a series

Back in 2023 during Toronto's series against the Florida Panthers, Morgan Rielly scored what looked like a good goal in Game Five, which would have tied the game going into the third period.
However it was called back despite being a good goal on the review because it was deemed the referee had supposedly blown the play dead before the goal went in. It's unclear what led to the play being blown dead, but fans were furious — even throwing things on the ice.
While Edmonton's situation is a bit different given they were the ones being scored on, Toronto also got screwed around by some weird officiating. It's not exactly an anti-Canadian bias however the fact it happened to two prominent teams under some odd circumstances could raise eyebrows.
Toronto lost the series to Florida and bowed out unceremoniously, and Edmonton is on the same path. Their only hope is that Connor McDavid can find it within himself to rally the troops because if not — it's game over.

Did Anaheim get away with a bad goal against the Edmonton Oilers?
