Though reports showed that Claude Giroux was signing with Philadelphia once again, that hasn't come to fruition yet as the Maple Leafs continue to keep watch.

Claude Giroux is a free agent who can still put up some pretty good numbers despite getting up there in age. He put together a very solid 55-point season with the Senators in 2025-26 and he has gotten attention from several teams around the league including his old team the Philadelphia Flyers.

Pagnotta's reported Giroux to Flyers deal is still not signed, leaving the door open

David Pagnotta reported that the team was actually signing Giroux with the terms and financials not yet determined, however with nothing official as of yet, Giroux is still a free agent:

Though with nothing set in stone, that means teams who are still interested can circle back and perhaps look to bring the veteran centre aboard, and for the Toronto Maple Leafs it may make a lot of sense despite having a new influx of centres.

Giroux is still someone who is elite in the face-off dot, is an above average defender, and someone who can still give you a secondary level of scoring that you can rely on. He can be the 2C or 3C, or if Toronto wanted to overload the wing, he could slide in with John Tavares or even Auston Matthews.

The 19-year veteran has 1,165 points in 1,345 games with the Flyers, Panthers, and Senators throughout his career, and his ability to help balance a locker room by being not only a respected and wise voice, but someone who also keeps things light and always wants to help make things better for everyone off the ice.

Toronto's interest is now reported but the cap may have other plans

Giroux would make sense for Toronto and it seems like they are seriously interested in him as reported by the Ottawa Citizen's Bruce Garrioch but herein lies the biggest caveat right now - cap space.

Toronto went on a spending spree during day one of free agency and with other trades and moves they find themselves $2.75-million over the cap. They can certainly sign Giroux but depending on the term and cost then they will need to find money to make it happen.

There's a high potential Max Domi's contract is used for relief given his injury issues, and there's always a deal for Morgan Rielly or Dakota Joshua that can open up room but those aren't guaranteed to happen and Toronto will need to get cap compliant elsewhere.

Interest will always be high for a player like Giroux but it's about moving the parts around that make it feasible to actually bring him in. The team invested a ton of money into the bottom-six and it could end up biting them if they miss out on Giroux, especially for fairly cheap.

There's also a chance that Giroux doesn't have a real place, and with Toronto pursuing other names like Patrick Kane, and he may be more attractive as a target given the connection to Auston Matthews and him being the perfect mentor for Gavin McKenna.

Giroux's always been a player who has torched the Maple Leafs throughout his career, so bringing him in would help solve that problem, but it creates a cap crunch that may not be so easy to navigate.
