Toronto re-signed Ryan Tverberg after a strong Marlies postseason run and his chemistry with Easton Cowan was a big part of their Calder Cup win.
The Toronto Marlies were led to a Calder Cup win off the back of not only a strong performance from Artur Akhtyamov, but they had a great group of talent in front of him with the likes of Vinni Lettieri, Logan Shaw, Easton Cowan, and William Villeneuve who were just as instrumental.
Lettieri led the team in playoff points and was re-signed to a one-year deal, meanwhile Shaw and Villeneuve are likely going to be huge parts of the Marlies this upcoming season, and Cowan obviously has a bright future with the Maple Leafs.
But there's one player who also deserves a lot of attention due to his postseason run, that being forward Ryan Tverberg.
Tverberg's Marlies postseason run earns him a brand-new one-year deal from the Maple Leafs
Tverberg, 24, had 36 points in 63 games for the Marlies in the regular season while adding 14 points in 24 playoff games and was pretty much glued to the hip of Easton Cowan all postseason and it led to a lot of success.
It led to him winning a Calder Cup which included recording three points in Toronto's five-game series win over the Chicago Wolves, and now that performance hauled him to receiving a new contract:
-
Tverberg signed a two-way deal which means the Maple Leafs mohave some flexibility with him as they can send him up and down between the NHL and AHL without risking losing him to waivers.
Drafted 213th overall by the Maple Leafs in 2020, Tverberg has 79 points in 162 games with the Marlies (28 goals, 51 assists), a plus-19, and 74 PIM while also appearing in two games for the Maple Leafs last season where he recorded no points, a plus-1, and 2 PIM.
Tverberg may be one of the first called upon if injuries start to pile up
With Toronto signing a lot more depth this past offseason, they are seemingly trying to prepare for the worst but in nabbing Tverberg they are adding a great stop-gap option. He's hungry for a shot, can kill penalties, is fast, gritty and loves to be a pest. He isn't huge but he plays like it, and had some creative chemistry alongside Easton Cowan.
He's certainly just more of a bottom-six forward, but if the team decides to put Cowan in that spot for the time being, then he and Tverberg could come together on the third line and play an uber-aggressive and speedy checking style that has history of being effective.
Plus, the two-way nature of his deal allows him to be sent down with ease when people return, and Toronto isn't going to have to worry about finding him a spot lest losing him to a rival team.
It's a safe deal that ensures one of the Marlies best players remains in town while also giving the Maple Leafs more flexibility and insurance when the injury bug eventually strikes.
Tverberg earned it though, and he certainly will get his looks this season - he deserves to at least.
Do you think Ryan Tverberg will get more opportunities with the Maple Leafs in 2026-27?
