The Buffalo Sabres hyped up a major announcement and delivered a total letdown. Now, rival fans are tearing them apart.

Fans of the Buffalo Sabres were hyped up by the team announcing a major announcement regarding the future of the team, sparking interest over what could be a major part of the team's identity.
What came from it was a dud of an announcement as the big reveal, with a set of large locked doors, was the news that the Sabres were keeping the naming rights with their arena sponsor, KeyBank Center, until 2036.
The move was met with criticism over what was viewed as an unnecessary amount of anticipation for a naming renewal, something expressed by both Sabres and opposing fans.
The move is being pointed to as a larger part of what is disappointment from the Buffalo Sabres over the last few years.

Why the Sabres' PR Misstep Says a Lot About the Franchise

The Buffalo Sabres have struggled to be a successful franchise, hoisted by their own misdoings each time something comes close to going right.
The Sabres have the longest active playoff drought going on 15 years now. They don't have a Stanley Cup ring to show for it (although many would argue quite strongly they were robbed of one in 1999), and have lacked much results to get them out of the league's basement.
Buffalo have had their opportunities to change their struggling ways. The Sabres had back-to-back second overall picks in 2014 and 2015, selecting Sam Reinhart & Jack Eichel. Both players ended up being key contributors to a Stanley Cup win, but neither did so in Buffalo.
Even more depressing is that neither are under the age of 30, meaning a core of Eichel & Reinhart in Buffalo could have been key to a Stanley Cup win if not for them moving both players, who got fed up with the lack of a winning culture.
Even while drafted second overall, Eichel was a player considered a first overall caliber player who happened to be in the same draft as Connor McDavid. He almost surely would have gone first overall the year prior where Aaron Ekblad went first and Reinhart second.
The loss of goaltender Linus Ullmark has not helped the Sabres process, as replacements have not solidified the position and youngsters Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Devon Levi have not yet shown their abilities to be top-level starters.
With recent first overall picks Rasmus Dahlin & Owen Power, as well as top forwards in Tage Thompson and JJ Peterka, Buffalo has still been on the outside of the playoff bubble.

For Once, It's Not the Leafs Getting Roasted Online

Luckily for Leafs fans, they seem to be able to be getting their digs in at a rival, for once not the butt of the joke for Toronto.
The Leafs have been used to being roasted and for clear reasons, but for once it's Toronto fans who are taking the laughs at their rival Buffalo.
If Buffalo makes it to the playoffs and are to face the Leafs, it could spark a strong rivalry between two teams with close personal connections.
The Toronto Blue Jays Triple-A team is located in Buffalo, and many football fans in Toronto, as well as in Canada (specifically in Ontario) are fans of the Buffalo Bills, both for being the closest NFL city and the former Toronto games played by the Bills.
The Sabres and Leafs could match similar intensities had between the Leafs and another close rival in the Ottawa Senators. It may not match the same regional stakes as the two provincial foes, but the Sabres have until 2036 for KeyBank Center to be the place to exercise their playoff demons, and people won't be laughing if they do it.
