The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be close on an extension for star Forward William Nylander, according to a report.
On Sportsnet's 'Kyper & Bourne', both hosts Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne report that they've heard the Leafs have made progress on a deal to lock up their star winger, with Kypreos hearing a deal could be for eight years at just over 11M, with $11.25M, or $90M in total being the number mentioned the most.
Kypreos further reported that both the Leafs and Nylander's team would like to finalize a potential deal before the NHL All-Star Game Weekend in the first week of February.
An $11.25M AAV would tie William Nylander for 6th in salary alongside David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins, 7th once fellow Leafs star Auston Matthews $13.25M contract kicks in next season.
The Leafs will gain substantial cap relief in 2024-25 with high priced contracts such as Matt Murray & Jake Muzzin, both making over $5M come off the board as upcoming free agents.
In 34 Games this season, Nylander sits T-5th in Points with 48, tied with Connor McDavid & J.T. Miller, along with 17 Goals and 31 Assists. Nylander leads all Leafs players in Points this season.
