Simon Edvinsson is a player the Toronto Maple Leafs should have their eye on, but the Detroit Red Wings have elevated their asking price for the defenseman.
The Toronto Maple Leafs could use a second pairing defenseman, and Simon Edvinsson has proven to be a player who would be of great use to the franchise.
He wants to be traded by the Detroit Red Wings, and while the Wings are looking for a solution, the fact remains that teams like the Leafs want to know the price tag.
According to Frank Seravalli, the Red Wings have a price tag, but it is not one that is particularly kind to the Leafs and general manager John Chayka.
Effectively, the Red Wings want NHL-ready talent. They will accept a futures-based package; however, the prospects included needed to be jam-packed with potential.
Sources say teams were told that the Red Wings would still rather have NHL-ready talent for Edvinsson, of course, but are open to considering the right package for Edvinsson that is more futures-based with prospects and draft picks.

Given what the Maple Leafs are trying to build right now, it feels as though an Edvinsson trade simply isn't possible right now.
What would the Maple Leafs give up?
At this time, it sounds like the Detroit Red Wings want players like Easton Cowan. However, the Leafs are more likely to give away someone like Ben Danford, and even that is a stretch.
Moreover, it is simply too early into the season to make a value judgment on prospects. While Edvinsson is a good opportunity, sometimes it is better to just watch than react.
Chayka has proven that he is willing to take some big swings when the opportunity presents itself, but the Leafs also have to think about what kind of contract they would give Edvinsson.
Overall, it is a tricky situation, and the Leafs have plenty of other options to look at in the interim.
Do you believe Simon Edvinsson would go to the Toronto Maple Leafs?
