William Nylander's Negotiations are Going Nowhere.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander haven't reached a deal yet for a contract extension.

Both parties have different views on Nylander's future. The principal interested wants a $10M AAV contract, but the Leafs are only willing to give him something in the range of $8M AAV.

An analyst shared an intriguing idea to solve the problem.

Possible Solution

The analyst, Dave Poulin, proposed the following idea on TSN:

"We're going to see shorter-term contracts. The solution here [with Nylander] may be a shorter-term contract."

Nylander might be tempted by the idea of signing a short-term contract, especially if it's in the range of $8M.

Then, after this contract, he'll be able to ask for a raise, as the salary cap will be higher in a few seasons.

Auston Matthews is also reportedly seeking a four/five-year extension, using the same strategy.
