Kyle Dubas is looking to make his first off season as the President of Hockey Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins a big one as he almost landed a 3-time Norris trophy defenseman.
Penguins Almost Land Karlsson
On July 1st the Penguins almost landed Erik Karlsson who just won the Norris trophy after putting up over 100 points last year.
"As I mentioned recently, the Penguins were extremely close to landing Karlsson on July 1. A deal was close to being completed that morning, which would have rocked the hockey world on what is already a volatile day."
- Josh Yohe
The Hurricanes and Penguins have become the two front runners to land Erik Karlsson but it looks like the Penguins might become the new home for the Swedish defenseman.
The Declined Trade
The trade package that the Penguins gave the Sharks goes as follows.
SHARKS Receive: Jeff Petry, Penguins 2024 1st round pick (top 5 protected), Ty Smith, Sam Poulin, Penguins 2025 2nd that can turn into a first round pick.
PENGUINS Receive: Erik Karlsson ($4.5 million retained) The Penguins would get Karlsson and keep pushing for a another ring for Crosby, Letang and Malkin.
The Sharks return is very interesting, Petry is a roster player to return for salary reasonings, Poulin and Smith are good prospects with the possibility of 2 1st round picks in the deal.
