The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly signing free agent Robby Fabbri to a PTO as the Toronto Maple Leafs decided against bringing in the former Craig Berube player.

With the regular season only three weeks away, and the preseason starting on Sunday, the Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up for their 2025-26 campaign with a roster full of new faces who are ready to make a statement.
However, GM Brad Treliving did mention that he still wanted to improve his roster at some point, and there are still talks about a potential Jack Roslovic signing in the same vein as Max Pacioretty last year; handshake agreement awaiting cap space.

Penguins Take Chance on Robby Fabbri, a Forward the Maple Leafs Passed On

But it seems the team has decided against signing at least one player this summer, and it's led to him receiving a tryout with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It was reported on Wednesday that free agent forward Robby Fabbri would be signing a PTO agreement with the Penguins to see if he can earn a spot in the lineup come October.
The news was also confirmed courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette thanks to a source close to the team.
The 5'11, 185-pound winger spent parts of four NHL seasons in St. Louis with Craig Berube at the helm and five in Detroit. Fabbri skated in 44 games with the Anaheim Ducks and registered 16 points (8 goals, 8 assists).

Maple Leafs' Roster Crunch Left No Room for a Gamble on Fabbri

We previously touched on Fabbri as a potential option for the Maple Leafs given his connection to Berube, and ability to play up and down the lineup.
However with a ton of bodies already in camp and a potential Roslovic deal in the works, there wasn't much room for Fabbri, who will at least get more time with a rebuilding Penguins team and could be a cheap stop-gap option as they deal away their other expensive veterans.
Fabbri was coming off an okay year in Anaheim and was only a season removed from scoring 18 with the Detroit Red Wings, and has dealt with multiple injuries over the past couple of seasons.
Brad Treliving did mention he wanted to improve, but it seems like it'll be either internally or through other means as the team passes on adding Fabbri as we dive into training camp.
