Nick Robertson's path to a roster spot appears blocked, and could force a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As teams have until Monday to get their rosters set, the Toronto Maple Leafs seem poised with what seems to be their opening night lineup, but it's beyond that creating intrigue.
Toronto could still have a healthy scratch option, which has been a likely battle narrowed down to Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, & Nick Robertson.
The youngest of the three, Robertson is a player coming off a 15-goal season, but has still been unable to get a full time roster spot in Toronto, again appearing to be relegated to the press box.
Robertson seems the likeliest for Toronto to stay if the Leafs can keep him, but the quest for playing time may challenge that as an option.
This season may be different as Nick Robertson, who nearly took the Leafs to arbitration, may be done waiting on the sidelines for his opportunity to come as a new challenge stands in his path.

Who's Standing in Nick Robertson's Way?

In what could have been a chance for Nick Robertson to make the Leafs lineup after years of work, he has been usurped in a rookie, Easton Cowan.
The Leafs first rounder has suddenly managed to become a legitimate NHL candidate and take away a spot from Robertson and a few others.
Robertson has also seen the additions of depth adds in Dakota Joshua & Matias Maccelli add further the challenge of him making the roster, and adding more forwards placed over him.
The emergence of Cowan has led to the possibility that Nick Robertson's time in Toronto could be eventually coming to an end if he doesn't have a place in the Maple Leafs system.

What It Means for Nick Robertson's Future in Toronto

It's unlikely to imagine Robertson would welcome a demotion back down to the Marlies, and he seems to want more than to be a healthy scratch knowing there's teams that may offer him more.
Robertson could eventually become a full-time forward in Toronto even if it hasn't happened yet, but he may not be willing to wait knowing Toronto's depth means it might not come.
A team with more roster holes could give Robertson at the very least an audition with a team needing forwards to showcase that he can deliver in a full-time capacity.
Toronto may not want to risk losing Nick Robertson, a player who showcases clear potential, but with a spot in the lineup, they may be left with zero options if he feels it's right for him to leave.
