Nikita Grebenkin at the Center of Questionable Roster Move by the Philadelphia Flyers
Nikita Grebenkin was briefly called up by the Flyers then just as quickly sent back down in a move that leaves some wondering exactly what the team is thinking.
While the season was a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago for the Philadelphia Flyers, they still have to finish out the regular season no matter
how rough things have been.Dealing with some misery right now and potentially short a few players, they needed some reinforcements desperately, leading to them calling up Grebenkin from Lehigh Valley.
Then, about thirty minutes later, the club sent him back down.
Originally called up on an emergency basis due to some prospective injuries to some players, but with them cleared to play, it's a short lived call up for Grebenkin.
It's unknown who Grebenkin would have suited up for.
Traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the deadline for
Scott Laughton, the fact that he didn't end up sticking around even with the injuries is a bit of a mystery.
The season is over for the Flyers and has been for some time. They fired John Tortorella after a 7-2 drubbing at the hands of the Maple Leafs, and with some pieces likely headed out of town and a chance to showcase their future,
Grebenkin deserved to be in the lineup for a look.
With 26 points in 48 games split between the Toronto Marlies and the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, there's a good chance he makes the team next season, so why not see what he has now?
Not only can he make an impact on the ice, but in the locker room and to a raucous Philly crowd; will be a fan favorite for years.
The Flyers traded away a lot of their locker room soul when they dealt Laughton and not giving the piece they gave him up for playing right now feels a bit like a waste to some.
Grebenkin deserves a chance to at least play out the remainder of the season and given the Flyers have nothing to lose; what's the harm?
He's already seen NHL games with the Maple Leafs this season, and while he didn't end up having much of an impact, can still contribute if given a shot and is also no stranger to the big time; playing two seasons in the KHL previous to coming over.
To be fair however, Laughton
hasn't been the type of player Toronto's needed which makes his arrival a bit questionable, and leaves one to wonder whether or not someone else should have been acquired, and the team could have possibly kept Grebenkin.
But for now, Grebenkin looks like he will need to wait his chance to show the Flyers exactly what he can do, but they really shouldn't wait too long because we all know brings at least two solid traits any coach wants to hear:
