New Toronto Maple Leaf Nicolas Roy revealed who impressed him in the first skate with his new team.
Roy, who was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights as the return for
Mitch Marner, spoke on his first time with Toronto, and gave the focus to one player who has impressed him in
his first time with the club.
Fresh off the Leafs prospect tournament and the focus turning to the big team with the preseason looming, an important point of interest for Toronto appears to be forming.
Who's Impressing Nicolas Roy at Maple Leafs Informal Skates?
Nicolas Roy has pointed out defenseman
Morgan Rielly as a player who has stood out to him early in training with the team.
Having made a strong first impression on the former Golden Knight, Roy cited Rielly as a player who showed his ability early on and impressed him on what he can do as a player.
Morgan Rielly's been buzzing in those skates. I wasn't there before. I've seen him, played against him, but he's been a really good.
Rielly left an impression on Nicolas Roy in their first skate together, enough of an impact to be singled out by the new Leafs forward, who provides a new perspective on the team and their strengths.
Roy has given a seal of approval to Morgan Rielly, and it's a major boost to the Toronto Maple Leafs who could really use a much more dominant and hard working Rielly next season, and will be key to the Leafs success in the long-term.
Rielly's Early Form Could Set the Tone for the Maple Leafs
Morgan Rielly is one player who is looking to have a major bounceback season, and it will be essential that he's taking charge and being more productive heading into next season.
Having been their top defender the past couple of years, Rielly had dealt with inconsistency in stretches, and had difficulties in his overall game.
The inconsistency seemed to solve itself in the playoffs in which Rielly was able to return to his own form, but that composure will be needed more in the regular season, avoiding the same challenges from last season.
Reilly will likely be in charge of quarterbacking the Leafs power play with Mitch Marner gone, having Rielly once again the main builder of the team's offense, another area where he'll need to be effective with Marner's playmaking hole needing to be filled.
Last season, Rielly put together a decent season albeit with some struggles; he put up 41 points in 82 games but was a step down defensively which made his offense woes worse.
The Toronto Maple Leafs didn't touch their defensive system beyond a depth trade for youngster
Henry Thrun, with the Leafs likely to go with the same group they had last year, they'll hope for Rielly to be able to take a leap in his game.
For the Toronto Maple Leafs to be successful, they will need a revitalized and re-energized Morgan Rielly, and if Nicolas Roy's words are anything to go by, that Rielly is showcasing himself early.
